To start out 2018 in this journal/ blog ... I wanted to kick it off with a great rock and roll, and rockabilly influence to so many, which was "Buddy Holly and the Crickets"(wikipedia) band out of Lubbock, Texas ... to be included in this blog's music/ arts honour roll society. Buddy himself dont need much introduction, as big an artist he was in his short career and lifespan during the 1950's rock and roll craze, and the list of folks that Buddy influenced with his songwriting, vocals, and guitar technique is really wide, so I'll let the wikipedia link handle that. What made Buddy also unique in his day, was not strictly his trademark guitar riffs and vocals (which I love his vocals and guitar work much on a song like "Peggy Sue") ... but that he produced, wrote, and the worx as far as his music ... this is a time for instance when alot music was made/ written by others and given to an artist, such as folks like Elvis Presley, instead of the artist writing their own music ... Buddy done it all himself. My mom is the one who turned me on to Buddy Holly, she was a fan of Buddy, and also, mom was a big 1950's rock and roll fan (although, my mom sang opera in school). Me being a kid, born in the 50's, made it so I heard alot of rock and roll from my mom playing it all the time as a child, my earliest appeal in music at a young age would have been the earliest Beatles and James Brown, were at the top of my list and interest as a child. Buddy came from a familia of local Texas musicians who played around Lubbock, Buddy himself was influenced heavily by country/ western ... so his method came about when he combined country/ western with rhythm/ blues, and he even opened for Elvis Presley at a time, early on. Meanwhile, as Buddy and his Crickets kicked off, pumping out music faster than it could be produced ... a few kids were listening across the Atlantic Ocean from the northwest England town of Liverpool, as they were looking for leads on how to get their sound and music structure together. These Liverpool kids became known as The Beatles, and Buddy Holly was their main influence, who used Buddy's guitar technique and musical arrangements as a template to kickstart their musical journey. Even their choice of the name "Beatles" was inspired by the name "Crickets", as well as wearing the suits, and John Lennon's thing with his glasses, since John never liked wearing his glasses performing, until Buddy Holly made him feel more comfortable to.
Right as Buddy and The Crickets were peaking and on the move, tragedy hit, when the plane that Buddy chartered, crashed in 1959 while touring ... sadly with Buddy, 2 other great rock and roll figures of that time, also died in that crash with Buddy ... Big Bopper/ JP Richardson of Sabine Pass, Tx, and Ritchie Valens of San Fernando Valley/ LA ... Ritchie was only 17 years old.
