***** ROCK AND BLUES MUSE | INTERVIEW: Interview with Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe ...
This entry into this journal's "music/ arts honour roll society" will be to have a taste of some of the talent of "Larkin Poe" (wikipedia) out of Atlanta, Georgia ... because on a scale of 1 to 10, they are without question, a "10". I linked a recent interview with Rebecca and Megan above. Megan and Rebecca are sisters, and between 2005 and 2009 they were known as the "Lovell Sisters", they played with their older sister Jessica those years, and were known as a bluegrass type crew, and were doing fairly well at such a young age, having recorded a couple albums and steady touring. When Rebecca and Megan took off with their new gig, they took the name of their great, great, great granddaddy, Larkin Poe, for a crew/ company name. Another outstanding musical quartet of all sisters is "Maid of Ace". Rebecca is such a soulful singer too, she is excellent, and the harmonies with her sister Megan are excellent! ... but they worked together since they started taking music lessons as little kidz, they had their shit down as soon as they hit their teen years. Also I want to credit Elvis Costello here too, who was not only a mentor for these kidz, but opened many doors for them too. Megan is outstanding at working that lap steel too, and love her slide work. They really fall great into the blues genre, in fact in 2014, in the UK, they were voted as Glastonbury's best discovery. They are also releasing their 4th full album as Larkin Poe next month, called "Venom & Faith", and have still plenty of work lined up touring with name acts, and a fan base internationally that's growing by the week ... everyone that I turned this crew on to, that were involved in music over the last couple years, praised them! They have that roots and blues written all over them too, and there has alwayz been such great music that comes out of that part of the U.S. in that genre ... after all, that's the birthplace. But many years back as a young man, I was absolutely blown away at some of the local musicians, some I had the opportunity to play/ jam with in Macon, Rome, and Atlanta myself. It just broadened my love for music at such a young age, actually getting to meet so many tight sounding blues musicians down in Georgia (acoustic and amplified), locals who worked the southeast circuit primarily, and it was so unique to me, because I came out of the northeast basically, and what I heard and experienced in towns like Brooklyn/ NYC, Buffalo, or Montreal was much different ... you had to go to the south to really get that down home roots experience, which I cherish the experience.
Below I wanted to mix some original composition with some cover work, because the cover work they do for such old songs just expand the songs to a new level. I open below with Bleach Blonde off their soon to be released november album. Then their cover of the classic Black Betty, the African American work song, that Lead Belly got main credit for his 1939 release of it, even though it goes back before Lead Belly too ... another excellent cover of "Black Betty" here by the Ministry, with a tad of metal/ industrial edge to it. Also the wonderful remake of the 1936/ 1937 classic, Come On In My Kitchen by Robert Johnson. Also their version of the 1929 Hambone Willie Newbern piece called Rollin' And Tumblin', some really nice work on! Also their cover of the well known Allman Brothers 1971- 1972 song "One Way Out", which actually goes back to Sonny Boy Williamson and Elmore James 1960- 1961, which Rebecca is so smooth on vocal- wise. Wishing this crew well ... Enjoy!
