This posting will be Part 29 of the "Taste of Texas" series for this journal, and to highlight another favourite place I love in Texas, this time way up in the Texas Panhandle, about 375 miles northwest of Dallas, and a tad south of Amarillo ... Palo Duro Canyon & State Park (Wikipedia), in the High Plains region. It also has a long history of folks living down there as long back as over 12,000 years ago, it's classic Indian/ Native American country. One of the things I love about Texas, is having so many different terrains to see and enjoy, whether you're looking for this, or the subtropical climate on the Texas coast, the Hill Country, mountains and desert out west, or the forest/ woods of the southeast, and all within hours of driving, or to the border of northern Mexico, and so much to see all over this state and history, also it's inexpensive touring around the state, with reasonable costs. But Palo Duro is absolutely beautiful standing on the rim or even deep down in it, they also have cabins built into the rim, an amphitheatre, and caves you can explore ... you can hike, bike, drive, or even sail over the canyon on a zipline. I myself drove down into the canyon twice ... and once I did in the late fall (november/ december?), it was very cool/ chilly that time of the year, and we drove in a convertible/ top down Fiat sport coup down into it right after sunrise, but the colours and view were awesome, I also drove down there in the spring, but I hear that it can really get hot in the summer down there, this part of Texas though has significant snowfall in the winter, unlike the warm Texas Coast with no snow, and is very dry/ low humidity. 2nd in size only to the Grand Canyon, this is really deep, long and wide, and as far as your eyes can see, and full of wildlife.
